Lean research workshop

The fast adoption of the Lean Startup management approach among startups, enterprises, and government agencies worldwide has brought new (and renewed) user research methods to light. These methods help answer people, teams, and organizations' questions about their customers. A key aspect of Lean User Research is that it creates a shared understanding among research stakeholders and provides fast, reliable results.

This workshop walks attendees through a lean user research process, from understanding what it is, what it is good for, and when to use and not use it, through quickly finding participants for research to actual implementation of methods.

In the spirit of Lean Startup’s Validated Learning principle, workshop attendees will spend most time practicing lean research methods to validate a problem users care about, a market with that problem, and a product that solves the problem for that market. The workshop wraps up with a Design Studio exercise to build a shared understanding and research buy-in among stakeholders.

Estimated duration: 1-2 full days

The MVP workshop

The Minimum Viable Product is one of the most critical yet misunderstood Lean Startup principles. This workshop is for product managers and owners who wish to be strategic and tactical with MVPs that fit an agile culture of continuous development, experimentation, and learning. Workshop attendees learn and practice building MVPs that reduce waste, build a shared team understanding, and create a path for successful innovation.

Estimated duration: 1-2 full days

Research repository workshop

Organizations that offer products and services often conduct a lot of research with their existing and potential customers. As organizations, offerings, and research all grow, several serious problems occur:

  1. Bad memory. The organization becomes bad at connecting the dots between pieces of knowledge and wisdom created and collected through time.

  2. Research silos. Many departments and teams conduct research in the organization yet there is no one way to make sense out of ALL the piles of data being collected.

  3. Reports. The atomic unit of a research insight is almost always long, fluffy reports centered on what was found in a study and are not granular enough to be used in the future. Many studies start with specific goals but end up finding additional important data. Reports fail to convey this data and make it accessible in the future.

Research repositories are designed (and have proven) to solve these problems. This workshop is targeted at people and teams who are interested in establishing a research repository in their organization.

Learning goals:

  • What is a research repository, and how it works.

  • Understand considerations for putting a research repository in place

  • Develop a taxonomy for classifying insights.

  • Understand and practice adding insights to a research repository.

Estimated duration: Full day (9-5)

UX measurement masterclass

Measuring the user experience is fundamental to improving it, and experience metrics are a great channel to learn from users. Experience measurement can be useful in any product or service development phase. Early on, it can be used to get input from target users. During iterative design and prototyping, experience metrics can be used to get quick feedback about design alternatives. Once a product or service is deployed, you can understand what is going on by systematically measuring customers’ attitudes and behaviors. This masterclass is oriented towards practical use, with a strong emphasis on interactive quizzes and real-world examples.

Learning goals:

  • Understand the difference between product and experience metrics.

  • Get familiarized with Google’s HEART framework for measuring experience.

  • Master practical techniques for tracking experience metrics.

Estimated duration: Full day (9-5)
